About this service

The Respiratory department at Royal Cornwall Hospitals looks after patients with lung problems and respiratory diseases. We work with patients both in our hospitals and out in the community.

We use a range of modern diagnostic techniques include fibre-optic bronchoscopy, lung function testing, chest ultrasounds and overnight studies for the diagnosis of sleep disordered breathing.

We also work extremely closely with the Cancer Services department at Royal Cornwall Hospital and Thoracic Surgery department at Derriford for treatment of lung cancer.

We run daily general clinics at Royal Cornwall Hospital as well as a number of specialist clinics, including:

  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Lung cancer
  • Thromboembolic diseases and non-invasive ventilation
  • Sleep apnoea
  • Asthma
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

We also run general respiratory clinics at other hospitals across the county including:

  • Camborne Redruth Hospital on Monday afternoons
  • St Austell Hospital on Monday afternoons
  • West Cornwall Hospital on Thursday mornings
  • Bodmin Hospital on Monday afternoons

We work with this service to help people deal with the health challenges they face by providing psychological assessment, guidance and intervention. We work alongside patients and their care teams to help reduce suffering, increase resilience and improve physical and mental health.

This includes:

  • helping to make treatment, surgery or rehabilitation more effective
  • helping patients adjust to, manage or recover from illness, injury or disability
  • helping patients, and their care teams, make decisions about their health.
