About this service
Working alongside our colleagues in Vascular Radiology, we provide a full range of treatments for diseases of the arteries and veins, and rapid access to treatment using both keyhole and conventional means.
The Vascular Unit at Royal Cornwall Hospital is one of the UK’s longest established providers of keyhole surgery for aortic and thoracic aneurysms (EVAR) as well as being one of the largest providers of keyhole endovenous surgery (VNUS) to patients with significant varicose veins.
Rapid treatment for patients with vascular conditions is essential. Throughout the week and weekend, our team of specialist vascular surgeons is available 24 hours to manage urgent and emergency conditions.
We work closely with the stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA) service in Cornwall to offer prompt assessment and surgery to patients who need treatment following a stroke or ministroke. We also work alongside the renal unit to create fistulas for patients requiring dialysis for kidney disease, and usually this can be carried out on a Day Case basis.
Outpatient clinics are held at a number of hospitals in Cornwall and wherever possible a Vascular Technologist will be in attendance so that we can carry out scans of arteries and veins at the same time and reduce the need for multiple attendances at hospital.
More complex investigations such as CT scans and angiograms are usually undertaken at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, in Truro.
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening programme
As part of the national Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening programme, all men aged 65 are invited for an ultrasound scan to check for swelling (aneurysm) of the aorta – the main blood vessel that runs from the heart, through the abdomen to the rest of the body.
We run this screening programme in collaboration with Derriford Hospital. To find out more about the screening programme, visit NHS Choices.
