Paracetamol and pregnancy – no evidence that taking paracetamol during pregnancy causes autism

Posted on:

Following recent media reports we want to assure you that there is no evidence that taking paracetamol during pregnancy causes autism in children, and it remains the safest painkiller for the majority of pregnant women to use when needed.

The largest study to date, conducted by a team from The Karolinska Institute in Sweden in 2024, involved 2.4 million children and found no evidence linking paracetamol taken during pregnancy to autism, ADHD or intellectual disability. Visit the PubMed website to read about the study.

We strongly advise you to continue to follow NHS guidance. Visit the NHS website to read more about taking paracetamol during pregnancy. If you are pregnant and would like some additional advice, please speak to your midwife or GP.
