BreastFest: Newquay Festival to Raise Funds for Cancer Research at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust

Posted on:

A vibrant festival is coming to Newquay this summer with a powerful purpose. BreastFest, a lively one-day event dedicated to raising crucial funds for cancer research at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT).

The festival was inspired by Jemma Sleeman, a breast cancer patient currently participating in a clinical trial at RCHT, along with her friend Danae Gilson-Smith. Diagnosed in 2020, Jemma is now giving back by supporting research that’s helping her and many others.

Jemma is one of 15 participants at RCHT taking part in a clinical trial investigating whether a blood test can detect the return of breast cancer earlier than traditional scans. The study also explores how effective preventative treatments may be in reducing recurrence.

“We wanted to do something bold, brilliant, and positive, something that brings people together while making a real difference,” said Jemma. “The research unit I’m part of is doing incredible work, and BreastFest is our way of showing gratitude and raising the money they need to keep going.”

BreastFest will take place at KillaCourt, Newquay, from midday to 6pm on Saturday 2 August 2025. The free-to-attend family-friendly event will feature:

  • Live music
  • Kids’ workout sessions
  • Dancing and entertainment
  • Drinks and refreshments
  • Charity auction and raffle

Coinciding with Newquay Lifeboat Day and the BIG Newquay Market, BreastFest promises a bustling atmosphere full of community spirit.

Funds raised will support the Cancer Research Fund at RCHT, which:

  • Improves patient care and access to innovative treatments
  • Aids early diagnosis and treatment of cancer
  • Enables the purchase of advanced medical equipment
  • Enhances hospital environments for cancer patients
  • Provides specialist training and additional research staff

A representative from the Research and Development team said:

“We are elated to be selected as the chosen charity for BreastFest! This support is invaluable in helping us advance cancer research that improves patient outcomes across Cornwall and beyond. Community events like BreastFest not only raise essential funds but also build awareness and hope for everyone affected by cancer.”
