New Changing Places facility for West Cornwall Hospital
RCHT has opened a new Changing Places facility at West Cornwall Hospital in Penzance. The facility was officially unveiled by Rachel George, and her adult son Adam, during a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday 28 April 2025. Rachel and Adam are long-time campaigners for accessible facilities in Cornwall, in particular hoist / changing assisted toilets for those with additional physical needs.
The new Changing Places facility provides a fully accessible peninsula toilet and height adjustable shower and changing bench. It also has a ceiling mounted tracking hoist, adjustable wash basin and privacy screen and adequate space for carers – meeting the needs of the most complex of patients and visitors to West Cornwall Hospital.
Changing Places for Cornwall campaigner, Rachel George says:
“Having more facilities like these around Cornwall is so important for families like ours. Changing Places toilet users across the country, and beyond, will share the same story, that a lack of these facilities often makes them reluctant to go to hospital. The lack of usable toilet facilities should never be a barrier to accessing healthcare. This facility will also bring the added bonus of enabling families like mine to enjoy days out nearby – knowing that we can access a Changing Places toilet when we need it, with dignity and independence.”
Paul Sylvester, General Manager, West Cornwall Hospital adds:
“We are incredibly pleased that this Changing Places toilet has opened at West Cornwall Hospital. It is vital that healthcare settings are inclusive to all so that we can continue to deliver outstanding care. We couldn’t be prouder to support the installation of this facility for our local community. My thanks to local contractor Nevada Construction and the project team at RCHT who made this happen.”
As part of the contract, Nevada Construction and its partners also provided a number of voluntary social activities to provide additional enhancements. These included transforming a small garden on the West Cornwall Hospital site, a donation to Food for Families in Penzance and adding a feature wall of art to the Changing Places facility.
Mark Jones, Associate Director, Nevada Construction adds:
“We’re thrilled to have completed the Changing Places project at West Cornwall Hospital. This initiative significantly improves accessibility and inclusivity for individuals with disabilities, offering safe and well-equipped facilities. It’s a proud moment for Nevada Construction, demonstrating our commitment to creating functional spaces that cater to diverse needs.”
