Cornwall Resident Shares Life-Changing Experience as Participant in Ground-breaking Diabetes Study

Posted on:

Laura Martin, from St Austell, has opened up about her life-changing experience as a participant in a diabetes research study at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT). This pioneering study is focused on lowering blood sugar and body weight in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Since January 2024, Laura has been taking part in the study, which involves taking weekly medication aimed at stabilising blood sugar levels with the added benefit of weight loss. Laura, one of nine participants from RCHT, was first approached about the study by her GP surgery.

The study involves regular monitoring, with Laura initially attending study visits every four weeks. She now sees the research team every eight weeks, along with regular follow-up phone calls to track her progress.

In reflecting on her journey, Laura said, “The research team have been brilliant, monitoring right the way through. They’re always here for questions, I can just phone up and talk to someone. It’s really nice to know that there is always someone there. I feel really looked after on this trial.”

Laura has experienced significant improvements in her health since joining the study. Her blood sugar levels are now at normal levels, and she feels better physically and mentally. In addition to stabilizing her blood sugar, Laura has lost a considerable amount of weight, which she sees as a wonderful added bonus.

A Cornwall resident for the past eight years, Laura has three children and a dog. Originally from Hampshire, she worked in Special Needs Education and is now retired. Laura stays active by volunteering at the Eden Project and Wheal Martin, as well as running a social prescription group to support mental health and physical well-being.

The positive effects of the study have also led Laura to enjoy more walks, socialising more, and feeling physically more capable. She is also learning more about diet and nutrition and hopes to one day share her experiences with others in similar situations.

“Thank you to the whole team here, they are all amazing. They’re so helpful and friendly and always have answers to any questions. I always feel very welcome here. They’ve all been fantastic,” Laura added.
