Dr Luke Hayward, anaesthesia resident based at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals, has been awarded the prestigious Nuffield Prize. The prize is awarded for achieving the highest levels of distinction at the Primary Fellowship examination of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA).

The Royal College of Anaesthetists awards the academic prizes to the candidates who excelled in that year. The FRCA exam is taken by 300 people annually from the United Kingdom and overseas, with only one of each of these awards presented nationally per year.

Speaking about the award, Luke said:

“I was very pleased to receive the Nuffield Prize. This award follows many months of hard work and reflects how supportive the Anaesthetic Department at RCHT is and continues to be.”

Praise and congratulations were offered by Dr Katharine Sprigge, Anaesthetic Consultant and College Tutor at RCHT, and Dr Neil Roberts, Anaesthetic Consultant, who said:

“The anaesthetic department is extremely proud of Luke’s success. We’re always proud of all our anaesthesia residents as they pitch themselves against the very tough anaesthetic training examinations, and we are delighted to see Luke’s extraordinary dedication and hard work recognised here with the highest of national accolades.”
