Cardiac Department and Fracture Clinic moves

Posted on:

The Cardiac Department at the Royal Cornwall Hospital is to move out of the Link Corridor to the first floor of Trelawny Wing in June 2025. It is relocating to the area next to the Outpatient Department, close to the Trelawny front entrance, and better located for the Cardiac Investigation Unit and Cardiology Cath Labs.

Moving the Cardiac Department is essential because the Link Corridor is to be demolished to make way for the new Women and Children’s Hospital. All services, including Pharmacy, Blood Sciences, Planned Care, the Mortuary and Haematology will eventually be relocated from the Link Corridor, ready for its demolition.

To facilitate the Cardiac Department’s move, the Fracture Clinic will move in March 2025 along the Trelawny Wing corridor to be better located next to the Trauma Assessment Unit and the Fracture Clinic’s X-ray department. This means that the current neurophysiology department will also be moved slightly, but within the same block.

Work started on the project on 4 September 2024. The cardiology secretaries have moved from the back of the Trauma Assessment Unit to Carlyon House. This will allow for that space to be reconfigured for Neurophysiology. It will take 8 weeks to complete this first phase.

Once Neurophysiology has moved into its new home, work can start to create the new Fracture Clinic next to the Trauma Assessment Unit. This will require considerable internal works; moving walls and doors to create new clinical spaces, a new reception and waiting area. The programme timeline sees the new Fracture Clinic opening in March 2025. Work will then start to move the Cardiac Department next door to the Outpatient Department ready for their move in June 2025. Considerable room reconfiguration works will be undertaken and a new air handling unit (for improvement ventilation in the unit) will also be installed.

Signage and wayfinding, as well as patient information will be updated as the project progresses through its phases.
